چکیده

Removal of nitrogen from wastewater is a national concern. Because of its impact on the environment, the USEPA has established limits for safe drinking water of 10 mg/l of water. Salt-water estuaries are also threatened by this productivity-limiting nutrient. Given an inventory in the United States of over 26 million septic systems, that discharge of nitrogen biological denitrification is considered essential to the lifecycle management of wastewater treatment systems. Septic systems inject an estimated six billion gallons of treated effluent a day into the groundwater and, assuming no losses, likely contribute1.76 million pounds of nitrogen to the environment. States along the eastern seaboard have for the most part ignored onsite treatment as a regional option for nitrogen removal and have instead focused on extending sewers and adding nitrogen removal systems to municipal treatment plants.

Nitrate Removal with Sulfur-limestone Autotrophic Denitrification Processes: Application and Kinetics

Nitrate contamination in ground and surface water has become an increasingly serious problem in the world. As an alternative biological denitrification process, sulfur-limestone autotrophic denitrification processes (SLAD) can be used for nitrate removal in water or wastewater that contains a limited amount of organic carbon sources. This paper summarizes applications of SLAD processes for nitr...

Removal of Hydrogen Sulfide from Septic Tank by Vermicomposting Bio Filter

Background & Aims of the Study: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless and highly toxic, easily dissolved in water, flammable and explosive gas. Hydrogen sulfide gas is the main cause of odor emissions from municipal sewage plants. One method for removal of hydrogen sulfide gas is the use of biological systems, biofilter. The aim of this study was to survey removal hydrogen sulfide provide in se...

Addition of Nitrate for Odor Control in Sewer Networks: Laboratory and Field Experiments

This paper presents a biological method for controlling odor problems caused by H2S originating from sewer networks under anaerobic conditions. The proposed method is based on the continuous addition of nitrate which oxidizes dissolved sulphide according to an autotrophic biological procedure and inhibits further sulphide production by sulphate reducing bacteria, until complete denitrification....
